When All Else Fails
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (PRWEB) July 06, 2023
Michael Pulley marks his return to the publishing scene with the release of “When All Else Fails” (published by Archway Publishing), the story of how doctrinaire Christianity can consume a man and his family, leading them to unfortunate and sometimes dangerous results.
Louis Lewis, a wealthy land developer suddenly converts to evangelical Christianity, which flummoxes his wife, a heavy drinking socialite, and daughter, an outstanding high school tennis player, and sends them into a series of unexpected events with an agnostic tennis coach, a closet Algerian Muslim tennis player, and underworld figures threatening to bankrupt the land developer. This often profane and comic novel is not moralistic or cautionary but offers a realistic glimpse into events when strong religious feelings engulf a family and send them on a journey no one expects.
An excerpt from the book reads:
She wondered if Louis would write the guy a check on the spot. Webster Boyd, Redfern College's Resource Developer (she loves the euphemisms colleges use to describe fundraisers), had been making financial overtures since Louis's new pastor alerted the Redfern administration that the Lewis family was ripe for picking. And even the college president -- the weaselly creep -- had ingratiated himself to Louis. Louis's recent and sudden conversion to evangelical Christianity had caused any number of God-fearing jackals to circle the Lewis estate. TV evangelists -- all with right-wing agendas -- had made their pitches, appealing to Louis's well-known conservatism. The poor man didn't know one thing about what he wanted his life to be, other than something else. She hated so much about him. And somewhere in her depths, she just might hate Louis, too. How he'd handpicked this Christian college for Michelle. And of all things, the place had an outstanding tennis team, his ace in the hole. Then Michelle's acquiescence to her father!
“This is a serious, comic, and near-tragic story with characters whom readers can identify with and feel ambivalent about. Today's hot-topic issues of politics and religion will draw and sustain readers' attention, while observing characters' reactions to those issues,” Pulley says. When asked what he wants readers to take away from the book, he answered, “I want them to understand how well-depicted characters encounter many wide-spread and common issues, sometimes succeeding, sometimes failing.” For more details about the book, please visit https://www.archwaypublishing.com/en/bookstore/bookdetails/844917-when-all-else-fails
